Cult Italo post-wave group CRISTALLI LIQUIDI are back with another 12" maxi single. This time the production was carried out by the godfather of Italian electronic music Alexander Robotnick with some mysterious intervention from Bottin. SCIAME (Italian for swarm) hits harder on the dancefloor then their previous releases, without losing a single drop of the italo lyrical magic.

close
The last few years have seen Belgian artist Innershades turn out plenty of rugged house on labels like Creme Organization and Pinkman, and now returns to the former with a four track EP on Dutch label MOS. The prolific producer shows he still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve across all four cuts and stitches in acid, jack and Chicago styles with his own sense of charm. The Kings comes hard and fast out of the blocks with big hits, wild synths and raved-up vibes that will have you punching the air. Knowledge is another banger with powerful kicks and globular bassline run through with more ravey sirens, but this time is a little more haunted. Crossing Paths is all about a simple but effective bassline that bounces along and takes you with it in ways similar to an Omar S joint, then Wait is the most stripped back and mysterious of the lot with cosmic melodies panning about in a spacious and airy deep house groove. Utterly timeless from start to finish, this is another massively effective offering from Innershades.

Wa Wu We

B1 We Float
close
Sebastian Mullaert and Kontra-Musik have been involved in a love affair for quite some time - an affair that even resulted in an offspring called The Dance that came out on Kontra-Musik last year. Sebastian Mullaert is of course first of all known as half of Minilogue, a duo so influential in the hypnotic field of Techno that Korg recently named a synthesizer after them. Lately, Sebastian has focused on his solo path under the Wa Wu We moniker, releasing stripped back and personal music on his own Wa Wu We label, the cryptic S.E.L.F label and now on Kontra-Musik. On the title track Travellers, Sebastian Mullaert uses a straight up techno formula that may surprise listeners who haven't followed his move into Wa Wu We territory. You almost get the impression Sebastian buried a recording destined for a rigid techno label in a deep forest back in the 90's and has now decided to uncover it again, finding that the track has matured under the black soil. The sharp edges are now covered in smooth moss and the soundscape is immensely deep and moist. But it's still a vibrant and very much effective track. Above all, it has loads of free space to let the listeners make up their own journeys as travellers into the world of sound created by Mullaert. We float, on the flip side, is a beautiful and meditative ambient piece. It's also the fastest way for the urban dweller to find him or herself floating in a serene lake surrounded by strong, green trees instead of floating in a sea of stress and anxiety. A set of headphones and this new release from Kontra-Musik and you're there.

2016 Repress, comes with the original artwork. Long time 154-compadre Aroy Dee, known for releases on Rush Hour (together with the M>O>S collective), comes with the goods on the immaculate NWAQ-imprint. Two bass-heavy pieces of euphoria bringing back the good old days of smaller towns, over-anxious smoke machines, lousy cocktails and smiling shirts. Oh, and girls with perm, tracksuits galore and getting down with the Pina Colada Magic Tour. We had the moves, the style, the action and the pussy, and we glance back at it with a slight touch of melancholia.. Thanks Mr. Dee, for bringing it all back.

Raw electronix all the way from Medellin, Colombia. It's Retrograde Youth making his debut on Radio Matrix. By serving us three different kind of tunes, he shows us he is definitely an artist to keep your eyes and ears focused on. Where the first track shows his more melodic side with a grimy twist, the darkness really starts to unfold on the flip. 'Love Fantasy' will fill the room and leaves no escape with its haunting bassline, flanged hihats and Earth shattering leads. And on the B2, 'No Time' is the one for the dark basements, straight up acid for the tough kids! And this is only part 1...

close
For the second part of his "Connection Lost" series Massimiliano Pagliara teaches a lesson in how to translate Disco music in a modern language of sound. Without further ado "Trying To Hide But Then I Cried" comes across as pure dance floor material. Above a drum-fueled foundation various synths swell up and down while the bassline is pumping steadily for an irresistible groove. "If You Were Here" on the other hand benefits from similar ingredients but has a rather dreamy feel to it. Thanks to its elegiac pads and pensive synth melodies. "Ukulele Groove" takes its time to build things up but when the bassline and those distinctive synth stabs come in you can't help but hope for a never ending summer. The final word here is "No More Love To Follow" featuring the vocal talents of Matthew Morris, a slow progressing, gloomy Disco ode to the ups and downs of love. As for the first part of "Connection Lost" the artwork was created once again by Alexander Dorn a.k.a. Credit 00.

Proper atmospheric techno tracks on the new Cabrera label! Killer Dario Zenker remix included!
The small but perfectly formed Cabrera label is to release a first EP from someone other than the Spanish label boss himself. It comes from Kastil and features two fantastic originals as well as a remix by Munich techno tastemaker Dario Zenker. Kastil is the Soul Notes label boss and is a producer and DJ who, for the last five years plus, has been setting his own agenda. From deepest, jazziest house to raw industrial techno and plenty in between, he has a singular style that is full of energy and always makes a big impact. This new EP proves that once more. Opener 'Vedanta' is a dark, foggy cut with muffled but driving drums down low, a lot of lofi dirt hanging in the air and skittish percussive hits darting about in a brooding chamber of sound. It is intense and steamy stuff for warehouse spaces in the dead of night. 'Xenopeltis' on the flip is a different animal: this one is eight minutes of loose breakbeats and urban soul that is melancholic and emotive but forceful at the same time. Remixing is Illian Tape cofounder Dario Zenker who has almost single handedly revived broken beat techno with the work of his label. His version is crunchy and old school, with rattling rave energy off set by serene synth work. It is an impactful track that rounds out a terrific techno EP.

Jericho One, the Creme Organization off shoot, is back with a new EP from Ebony vs 'R' entitled Real Truth. It features three cuts in all, one by Ebony and two by 'R', and all them are intoxicating techno affairs. Continuing in the label's tradition of making modern sounds that draw on breaks and bass, it is another fine EP after great offerings from BNJMN and Noface amongst others. Ebony goes first with Real Truth and offers a track that is both punchy and powerful thanks to its raw and thumping drums, but spiritual and serve thanks to the pained and soul infused vocal wails up top. Glistening glass pads and over sized hi hats add to the intensity of this classy rave banger. 'R' then serves up Focus, eight minutes of freaky and hypnotic techno with creepy voices moving about the space as distorted kicks and droning reverb brings a physical feel. It's intense and dark and then comes Colossus, a breakbeat driven track with heavenly pads making for a grand and atmospheric headspace. Cosmic signifiers and far off pads add to the serenity of it all and will leave you with both a heavy heart and a stomping foot.

BodyTrax drops it's second EP of 2016 with another essential 3-tracker from Bodyjack. Laugh It Up opens things up and we are in vintage Bodyjack territory from the outset. Rough (and we mean rough!) beats and percussion, vocal hook and a metallic riff combined with possibly his ugliest bass line to date to make this an essential addition the bag/crate of any house DJ. Slow Clap strips things right down to just drums and bass taking the track into even more raw areas. Warehouse vibes! The title track I'm Here All Week on the flip is one of those simple but infectious house tracks that you're going to remember after a night out. Once again, our man's synth n' bass work duck around those sharply programmed beats he's know for to round off the EP with a bang.

Repress! Following on from a full-length album of grainy, synth-laden house on Mathematics, and equally unique EPs on Thug and LIES, Simoncino makes his debut on Creme Organization with five suitably esoteric house offerings. Two of the inclusions, Interval I and Interval II, are serene ambient pieces that showcase this Italians serious synth-scaping skills, whilst the other three are gorgeously romantic and nostalgic house tracks made for the more sensitive dancefloors out there. Tape 1 is the meanest, with a growling bassline and splashes of loose-limbed percussion, where Tape II is much more uplifting owing to the celestial patterns that twinkle above muggy and muddled Chicago drums. Tape III is downbeat and melancholic thanks to the subdued, rubbery bassline, but more golden pads light up the thing with plenty of very real, cautiously optimistic emotions. This is house music to take you to another world entirely, and it's a fine place to be.

Lost Trax embody the idea of underground techno. The shadowy group, members unknown, began their music careers over 20 years ago. Output may be low, but quality is high; the style being no compromise techno brilliance. And that's what's on show here. Kick drums and squirming acid bars are at the core of "Faith", a track where soaring strings shift and reshape. The chiselled claps and barbed bass of "Flatliner" follows, taking its cue from the heyday of Detroit. A watery world of analogue abstraction greets the listener on the flip, "Lost" being an atmospheric journey into to the squelching swamps of the TB303. Sniping beats introduce the lush tones of "Renderer." Blurring the lines of electro and techno the track is an elegant end to an EP of deep and dense layers.

An Atlantic crossover brings together Detroit's Stingray313 and Glasgow's Galaxian for a very special 12". More collaboration than split, the EP sees each artist fly solo as well as combining their admirable analogue abilities. Pressures are high from the outset, Galaxian twists and teases patterns in the reverbing reverence of "Storm Coming". BPMs surge as the two merge for the cold "NU-1000". Lilting notes ghost between rasping rhythms. And it is around such racing drums that warmth flows, as in the meandering softness of "Graphene". Beats don't abate as Stingray takes the helm for the blistering bass of "Dopant".
