The second release on Leyla Records is a meeting of techno minds between South West UK's JoeFarr and Martyn Hare. Mode features three blistering cuts shaped from a classic British industrial mould.
The record opens with 'The Inside', a five-minute A-side workout for the body and mind pressed on 45rpm for maximum dancefloor impact. A mournful lead rises over a subtly skittish rhythm and the pressure builds gradually towards an ecstatic, yet impossible, release. On the B-side, the pair 'Go Fourth' into machine armageddon. Icy, angular melodies grate against rock solid foundations in a series of switches that keep the listener on the edge. 'Safe Mode' closes proceedings with a gentler touch, a meditative eyes-down moment full of rhythmic flourishes that propels you into the night.
Mode is a fluid distillation of both producers' style, three tracks that pay homage to the past, have their eyes set on the future but remain all about the present moment, sweat dripping from the ceiling as the crowd goes off. It's another strong salvo from Leyla Records, proclaiming the Amsterdam-based label's intention with righteous fury.
